LaTeXbangla 2.1 — Writing Bangla & Assamese with ordinary LaTeX
LaTeXbangla switches automatically between your chosen language and English,
preserving your English fonts. It supports bold and italic, native lists and
numbering, references, citations, and text and digits in mathematics.
Getting started
Compile with XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX on an updated TeX Live 2024 or later.
For a local installation, copy this folder's contents beside your document,
keeping the subfolders intact. Install a supported Bangla font, then use its
name below:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{latexbangla}
\setbanglamainfont{Kalpurush}
\begin{document}
\section{বাংলা এবং English}
বাংলা and English একই অনুচ্ছেদে।
\textbf{বাংলা and English দুটোই bold।}
\end{document}
Tested fonts for both languages: Kalpurush, SolaimanLipi, Siyam Rupali,
Noto Serif Bengali, Noto Sans Bengali, Anek Bangla, Tiro Bangla, Galada,
Hind Siliguri, Nikosh, Kohinoor Bangla, Mukti, Baloo Da 2, Lohit Bengali,
Jamrul, Likhan, Shimanto, Mina, AdorshoLipi, BenSen, BenSenHandwriting,
Atma, Alkatra, Shonar Bangla and FreeSerif. Jamrul 0.1 and Likhan 0.6 lack
ৎ (U+09CE). Other Bangla fonts may work too, but have not been tested.
Fonts are not included. Load the Anek and Alkatra variable fonts by filename;
see the manual for examples.
For Assamese documents, use \usepackage[language=assamese]{latexbangla}
and the same font commands. Bangla remains the default language.
Choosing an English font is optional: use \setmainfont as usual if you want
to change it. Automatic numbers use native digits by default; set the package option
changecounternumbering=false to keep the usual numbering. Digits you type
retain their script.
Read latexbangla.pdf for the full guide in English, Bangla and Assamese, with code and
rendered examples, font settings, custom counters and help with older documents.

LaTeXbangla – Writing Bangla and Assamese with ordinary LaTeX
LaTeXbangla makes it possible to write Bangla and Assamese documents with minimal setup and familiar LaTeX commands. Choose a Bangla font and write either language alongside English, with automatic font switching that preserves your chosen English fonts. Features:
- Automatic font switching, with bold and italic fallbacks when needed.
- Bangla and Assamese counter numbering, alphabetic list labels, and localized document headings.
- Integration with references, hyperlinks, and citations.
- Bangla and Assamese text inside equations using \text{...}, and native digits directly in mathematics, including unbraced superscripts and subscripts.
- Tested support for 25 font families.
- Independent English and math font choices.
The package supports XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX and builds on fontspec and Polyglossia.
